Biographical Sketch

Dr. Winawer received her M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1994. She did her medical internship at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, and then completed Neurology residency training at Columbia University/The New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Neurological Institute of New York from 1995-1998. From 1998-2000 she completed a fellowship in Epilepsy and Neuroepidemiology at Columbia, and in 2000 she received an M.S. in epidemiology from the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University. In 2000, she was appointed Associate Professor of Neurology at Columbia University and an Attending Physician in the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center of Columbia University. She is involved in clinical, education, and research activities at the Columbia University Medical Center and Harlem Hospital in New York City.

Research Summary

My current research focuses on multidisciplinary approaches to epilepsy genetics, combining mouse models, computational genomics, and human studies to find genes that raise risk for epilepsy. In addition, I focus on phenotype definition, using genetic epidemiology techniques to investigate the role of genes in raising risk for specific epilepsy subtypes. Working with Dr. Ruth Ottman, the Deputy Director for Research at the G.H. Sergievsky Center, I have also been involved in the discovery and ongoing characterization of LGI1, the causative gene for Autosomal dominant partial epilepsy with auditory features (ADPEAF), and further characterization of clinical features of individuals and families with mutations in this gene. New directions in research include use of mouse chromosome substitution strains to identify temporal lobe epilepsy susceptibility genes.
